Description

This new series of ITM alumni webinars features the four ITM winners of the Prize for Global Research 2022. The Prize for Global Research is awarded yearly by the Province of Antwerp to research projects of ‘master-after-master’-students of ITM and other Higher Education Institutes. Development relevance, quality and originality of the master theses are key in the selection. Through this award, the Province of Antwerp wants to stimulate research relating to the global South.

In webinar #1, MPH-alumnus and laureate Joseph Djoki Bahati (DRC) will present his master thesis, entitled «Humanitarian Aid Agencies and Responsible Exit in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings. A Case Study of Zummar Project (Iraq) Médecins Sans Frontières-Switzerland»

In his thesis work, Joseph deepened the reflection about the role and impact of international humanitarian aid agencies, such as MSF. Such agencies are regularly confronted with complex contexts and difficult decisions. The latter include when and how to terminate their interventions without negative impact for the host country and the aid recipients, as well as for the humanitarian organization itself.

Joseph will present the main outcomes of his scoping review, conducted in order to map the exit strategies of international aid organisations and to identify concepts, theories, frameworks and knowledge gaps on the issue. Furthermore, he will discuss the theoretical framework he developed and applied to a case study of MSF’s project in Zummar, aiming to analyze if and how a MSF implemented a “responsible exit” at the end of the project.

The Q&A-session, moderated by MPH co-coordinator Marlon Garcia Lopez, will enable to answer questions from the audience and to share topical experiences in other international settings.
