The massive cuts to US humanitarian and global health assistance on an already underfunded, weakened healthcare system, following years of violence, conflict and chronic issues, are going to cause major suffering among communities living in precarious conditions and people in need worldwide. MSF teams in our areas of intervention are witnessing the immediate impacts of the funding cuts: shortages of therapeutic food and nutritional supplements, disruption of vaccinations, suspension of sexual and reproductive health programmes and the supply of goods such as contraception, disruption of water provision in humanitarian settings, and lack of access to services and treatment for HIV, TB, and malaria. The US cuts have opened a trend for many governments around the world (specifically in Europe) to follow the same paths by cutting in their international aid fundings and programs too. HIV remains a major threat, with 1.3 million new infections in 2024—one every 24 seconds.
The Global Fund is deallocating resources, pressuring countries to make savings despite unmet needs. Future prospects are uncertain, especially for fragile populations already lacking access to care.
Key populations and community-based organizations are being excluded by new US policies. This threatens proven models of care and risks a surge in advanced-stage HIV cases. MSF aims to spotlight this crisis through a hybrid conference on November 26. The event will foster discussion on adaptation and innovation in the face of this shifting landscape.
