Medics On The Move For What Matters
09/09/2025

Healthcare is not a favour. Protect the right to life.

Healthcare workers from across Europe will head to Brussels on Monday September 22nd, 2025 for a joint international demonstration.

We are calling attention to the growing violations of medical neutrality in conflict zones worldwide — with Gaza, over the past twenty months, standing as a devastating example. The catastrophic impact of the destruction of the humanitarian right to healthcare has become painfully clear: more than 1,500 healthcare workers have been killed, and hundreds imprisoned, many without charges.

Attacks on nearly all hospitals and healthcare facilities, along with the blockade of food and medical aid, have gravely violated the fundamental right to life and care. Food and medical care are not weapons of war.

As healthcare professionals and supporters, we make an urgent appeal through this European demonstration, calling on our European institutions to act without delay:

1. Guarantee the right to healthcare – both to receive and to provide it.
Access to medical care is a fundamental human right. The EU must strongly defend the free passage of patients, medical supplies, and healthcare workers – even in besieged or occupied territories. Medical aid must never be obstructed or used as leverage.

2. Protect healthcare workers – uphold the Geneva Conventions.
The Geneva Conventions oblige states to protect medical personnel, patients, and healthcare infrastructure – even during armed conflict. Attacks on hospitals, ambulances, and care providers are war crimes. The EU must actively defend these treaties and hold violators accountable.

Gaza must not become the precedent for the destruction of the universal right to humanitarian medical care.

We call on the European Parliament, European Commission and all European governments:

  • Act now.
  • Guarantee medical neutrality.
  • Protect the right to health.
