Title: Magic, Science, Misdirection, and the illusion of (im)possible alternatives in Global Health
Abstract:
Drawing from concrete projects, we will go into several examples of how the ways in which we see the world, what is implicitly normal, translates into global health research and practice and can draw our attention away from alternative solutions. From artificial intelligence’s presentations of race to differences in housing structures in Peru and Cambodia, social categories and the definition of units of analysis in the Gambia, disease perceptions and ethics, we will present the relevance of socio-cultural diversity for health interventions.

Short Bio:
Koen Peeters (publishing as Koen Peeters Grietens) heads the Unit for Socio-Ecological Health Research (SEHR) at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, is a senior lecturer at Nagasaki University and is affiliated to the Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research. He holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology and has conducted extensive research on sociocultural factors related to infectious disease transmission dynamics, community perceptions on health and illness, and their impact on the effectiveness of disease prevention, control and elimination strategies. His professional experience is characterized by high international mobility and extensive field research in low-income countries, including West Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia.
